1. Personal Background

Born in Bedford in 1972, moved to Doncaster in 1982 due to my Fathers job. Secondary education taken at Hatfield High School.  After leaving school started a welding apprenticeship with a local firm.  Applied to join the Royal Air Force and joined in October 1990. Moved around the country on various postings and detachments.  Numerous Out of Area detachments abroad including serving in the last Gulf campaign.  Now looking to use my technical and transferable skills, gained whilst serving in the forces, to fill a post in IT support or networking within a forward looking, ambitious and competitive company.

2. My Characteristics

I am a hard working and enthusiastic individual, keen to learn and integrate as part of a team.  I have an in depth knowledge of Microsoft operating systems, 9x, 2000, NT4, XP Pro, through working in the Royal Air Force over the last fifteen years and my secondment to JBC Computers Ltd. This included the role out of PC desktop systems over a station wide network along with the installation and configuration of PCs and their associated operating systems.

While IT was not my primary role whilst serving in the Royal Air Force, I had the opportunity to work within the IT cell on station for a number of months as they where short staffed. During this time my tasks included:-

  • Auditing PCs and peripherals in sections to ascertain what requirements they had.
  • Setup and testing of new desktop PCs.
  • Installation of operating systems and software using Norton Ghost.
  • Setup of PCs in there relevant sections.
  • Driver installation for peripherals and network cards.
  • Manufacture of Cat 5 UTP patch cables to required lengths.
  • Call logging.
  • Helpdesk/Desktop support over a station wide network

Helpdesk and Desktop support mainly involved driver issues, printer and password/login problems.

In the course of my duties I have liaised with the IT cell on section PC problems, so they had a clear and precise understanding, and where necessary rectified these problems where administration rights would allow. i.e. windows desktop and roaming profile issues.  I have analysed and designed Management Information Systems to aid in the tracking of maintenance for ejection seats currently in service for the whole of the Harrier fleet, saving time and increasing efficiency.  This was accomplished using MS Access, adding macros, editing VBA and SQL statements.  I have also co administered a Management Information System for the tracking of building maintenance and explosive safety regulations within a large explosive storage area.  This entailed call logging of building maintenance and safety issues, the up keep and maintenance of the system. Co-ordinating all aspects of Health & Safety and Explosive regulations within a multimillion pound explosive storage facility, liaising with civilian contractors and service managers to provide a safe environment.

Also while not on duty I have provided in my own time Helpdesk and Desktop support for work colleges and personal contacts.  The tasks ranged from installation of anti virus/spyware software, operating systems, hardware and software Firewalls, memory, hardware upgrades, and fault finding PC hardware and software problems.  Installation of small home networks and routers, cat 5 cabling where required and security issues where wireless networking was to be implemented. With this I provided clear advice and recommendations. Training was also given if needed.

A proven track record with the ability to work within teams, or alone to fulfil my duties, through such activities as liaising with my peers, station contract managers and higher authorities for advice and positive actions to problems verbally as well as written, using electronic media and written reports, including organising meetings and keeping to tight schedules aided with the use of such tools as MS Office, MS Outlook and MS Project.

Being flexible plays a major role within the Royal Air Force, working out of area and on detachments at short notice with the ability to still perform and fulfil tasking. This flexibility was proven while serving in the Gulf during operations in extreme conditions.  Having a good sense of humour is essential when put into this kind of situation.

I have continued to further my education, including an Ordinary National Certificate in Engineering as well as a Higher National Certificate in Business Information Technology, keeping abreast of new ideas and technology.

Problem solving techniques have been honed with my time in the Royal Air Force either in engineering, Information Technology or Interpersonal, through engineering and maintenance tasks, role out of PC desktops or the welfare of the people in my charge.  This has also been reinforced with my secondment to JBC Computer Ltd with fault finding, diagnosis and rectification of desktop PCs, servers and networks.  This included the installation of server 2000 and 2003, MS Exchange 2000.  The creation and configuration of user accounts and user groups on the Domain Controller and Exchange mail server.

Now with my Maintenance Networking Engineering role with Screenplay Communication Ltd I have expanded my knowledge in Network topology and operation.  Having shared reasonability of monitoring the network and diagnosing network faults and communication issues.  This involves configuration and remote administration of Cisco routers from there 800 series range.  Remote administration of client machines and of the companies server.  Also using Sonicwall to maintain VPN tunnels to these remote sites.

3. Interests & Specialties

Like to play squash, Anything IT, Computer games in spare time between gardening.  Taekwondo, but had to give up instructing due to service commitments, CB Radio.

4. Work Experience

15 years serving in the Royal Air Force as an Armament Technician, seconded to JBC computers Ltd for training in the ICT industry.

11 months as a Maintenance Network Engineer with Screenplay Communications Ltd.
